From the moment the doors opened, there was a real buzz in the air, with families, friends, and members of the community coming together to celebrate such a special occasion. The atmosphere throughout the day was incredible full of laughter, music, and smiling faces at every turn

The sense of togetherness and pride was felt throughout the entire event.

The West of Ireland is where anyone can enjoy the Wild Atlantic Way, the 2,500km long coastal road from Malin Head in County Donegal to the Cliffs of Moher and more.

The West of Ireland is where anyone visiting can enjoy the Wild Atlantic Way, the 2,500km long coastal road from the wind-whipped tip of Malin Head in County Donegal to the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare to the balmy beauty of Kinsale town in County Cork. Any stop along the way will astound any visitor with its epic landscapes and charm them with its quiet moments.

The Wild Atlantic Way is home to places that have inspired dreamers and drifters, poets and painters, with a landscape laced with dry-stone walls, thatched cottages, brooding mountains and deserted beaches.

The wild is everywhere along this coastal route. There are sheer cliffs that plunge into crashing Atlantic waves and remote, weather-beaten islands. And most of all, the west of Ireland can foster so many moments of connection. From a chat with the locals, to the warmth of a fire-lit pub and the tapping feet of a traditional music session, the essence of the Wild Atlantic Way runs deep.

Visitors to the Hidden Heartlands will be able to view sights like the satiny sheen of a quiet canal cutting through rolling green fields and walking trails that weave through peaty bogland where ancient Celtic rituals once took place. The Heartlands is a destination linked to both water and land that is heralded for its pure beauty.

The Hidden Heartlands basks in nature and contains under-the-radar experiences that feel like you’re getting to the real heart of Ireland. There, amidst a natural wonderland of rivers, canals and lakes, any visitor will feel at ease. Picture a paddle along glass-blue rivers, lakes and canals or a walk along centuries-old canal paths once used for horses drawing barges. Cosy up over candlelit dinners in waterside thatched pubs or unearth thousands of years of history in heritage parks, historic abbeys and monasteries. All of this and more can be found in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.

No matter where you stay in Northern Ireland, there’s an experience to be had. For those looking to take in the scenic beauty, or exploring The Causeway Coastal Route.

"When it comes to adventure, Northern Ireland has it covered!"

No matter where you stay in Northern Ireland, there’s an experience to be had. For those looking to take in the scenic beauty, you can explore The Causeway Coastal Route, from Belfast to Derry, known to be “one of the greatest drives on earth”. Or for anyone that enjoys Halloween, heading to Derry-Londonderry during the holiday season means enjoying “the best place to spend Halloween” as the county doesn’t just celebrate for one day, but turns the holiday into an event over a week long. For any golfers, the Royal County Down is home to Golf Digest’s number one golf course in the world.

And on top of the epic sights and world-class experiences, there’s the unique spirit of Northern Ireland, a land that resounds with myths, from the Sperrin Mountains to the Giant's Causeway. And you’re never far from a memory in the making, whether it’s the 16th century walls of Derry~Londonderry or the inky waters of Lough Erne.

Northern Ireland is a place abounding with creativity, from the music scene in Belfast to the literary greats of both the past and present. And for every showstopping sight, there's a quiet moment that will stay with you forever. If you're looking for somewhere to nourish your spirit, Northern Ireland is it.

THistory is everywhere in Ireland and no more so than in Ireland’s Ancient East. When visiting, many will first be struck by the tranquil and beautiful land of rolling green hills, charming towns and quiet waters, all framed by the River Shannon and the Irish Sea. This beauty also holds over 5,000 years of history.

Exploring Ireland’s Ancient East means uncovering the compelling characters and ancient mysteries, hidden stories and millennia-old myths. There’s no experience that compares to stepping inside a 5,000-year-old monument or witnessing the coastal view from the top of a 13th century lighthouse. Visitors can also ride across the waves to Spike Island in Cork, known as Ireland's Alcatraz, and once the largest prison in the world, walk in the footsteps of the Vikings through the narrow streets of Waterford or take a moment on top of the mystical Hill of Tara in Meath, the dwelling place of the gods.

A trip around Ireland's Ancient East brings history to life against a backdrop of unforgettable scenery.

“Birmingham Irish Association are pleased to bring the annual Birmingham St Patricks Day festival under its remit and will take the opportunity to review, refresh and refocus the Parade, revitalised in the 1990’s. In no small way we believe the St Patrick’s Day festival and the Irish community helped to keep Digbeth alive and turn it into the vibrant cultural area it is today, but due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control it will not happen in this location in 2023.

“We aim to secure the Parade for future generations and showcase all Irish Traditional culture, music, dance, language and Gaelic sports, and the contribution of the Irish community to Birmingham. BIA will be working with participants, partners and Birmingham City Council to see what is feasible given timeframes and budget pressures and location issues. Discussions are in the early stages and no firm decisions have been made.”

It’s coming back! The St Patrick's Day parade is set to return after a three-year hiatus next year, and I wanted to use my column this month to congratulate and thank everyone at the Birmingham Irish Association for making it happen.

I promised back in March that I would support Maurice Malone and the team at the BIA in their efforts to get the parade back, and I’m delighted that it’s happening.

We all know that the Covid-19 pandemic - followed by the roadworks in Digbeth - meant this hugely popular event, which attracted about 80,000 people, has not been held since 2019.

The Birmingham parade dates back to 1952, was one of the first in Britain and, for a time, and was reckoned at one point to be the third biggest in the world.

The returning parade is being supported by Pairc Festival next year,

which is a celebration of Irish music and culture, and will launch

its 2024 event on the same day.

The Parade is not only a hugely important calendar date for our Irish community, but also one of those brilliant, iconic events that illustrate

the real cultural diversity and unity of the city and our region.

Now, the planning and organising starts. The event will take place on St Patrick's Day itself, 17 March, and be accompanied by a festival and concerts, with artists including Keith Duffy, Brian McFadden and Nathan Carter performing across the weekend.

After the huge success of the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham is attracting more and more visitors. The welcome return of the St Patrick’s Day Parade to our annual calendar of events provides another vibrant, colourful attraction that shows off the city at its very best.

I know that the BIA will be working hard already to organise a memorable Parade, which will once again see thousands take to the streets to celebrate this very special day for our Irish community.

I can’t wait to join in the celebrations.
